8 Ways to Make Money Doing What You Love
What's your motivation for going into business? What excites you about it? Maybe it's the joy you get from creating, or the satisfaction of planning. Or perhaps it's using your education, or having the flexibility to work from home and spend more time with your family. Whatever it is, your "why" is the thing that moves, drives and energizes you, and knowing it will keep you motivated when things get tough.
Goals must be specific, measurable and have a time limit. Instead of "My goal is to expand my business," think, "My goal is to increase orders by 50% by December 31." With those details, you've specified how you want to grow and moved one step closer to creating a strong goal that will work for you.
Think of it this way: A business makes you money; a hobby costs you money. A business can and should be fun, but it has to make money in order to grow and last, and you need to make a profit to validate the time invested in it.
Sacrifice is inevitable with every new goal and level of growth in business. And imagining how hard it will be to wake up early, give up free time or sit down at the computer for hours on end can be discouraging. To change your mindset, anticipate instead how accomplished you'll feel at the end of each day as you move your business forward. This shift of focus trains your brain to release positive hormones at the thought of your work.
In two sentences or less, you answer the question, "What does your business do?" It should focus on the benefits to the customer, not the features of your business. For example, if you own a fitness company, don't say, "We have great nutrition counseling and a variety of exercise classes." Instead, say, "We help people feel confident about their bodies." Your pitch should answer the question every potential customer is thinking, which is, "What's in it for me?"
Many women feel guilty or greedy when they see the profits they earn from their business. But when you're successful, you are meeting the needs of the customer, providing products and/or services they want and are willing to pay for, and contributing to the economy. Plus, with the money you make, you're helping support your household and, if you wish, giving to causes you care about.
Even if your business is unique, there will probably be other companies doing something similar. Don't be intimidated—researching other businesses can help you:
•Determine the industry standard.
•Discover best practices.
•Get a baseline idea for pricing.
•Learn from their mistakes without making them yourself.
•Appreciate what they do well and add that into your own business plan.
