Would a warning label stop you from reaching for that pint of Chubby Hubby in the fridge? What about a big red sticker?

According to research from Massachusetts General Hospital, attaching red, yellow or green labels to the items in your fridge may help you eat healthier and make better choices. A doc and her team of researchers color-coded all of the food items for sale in the hospital cafeteria. The healthiest foods, like fruits, veggies and lean meats, got green labels. The moderately healthy ones received a yellow label and the least healthy options—chips, sugary sodas and fried foods—were given a red label. The results: sales of red-tagged items decreased 9.2% and sales of green-tagged items increased by 4.5%.

I think this is an interesting concept and applicable in everyday life. You don't need to go overboard and label every little item in your kitchen, but putting a red sticker on that bag of potato chips or sleeve of cookies may be a good reminder to stop and think about whether you really want to eat the item. It also reinforces that these should be once in awhile indulgences, not part of your daily intake.
