Renewing of U.S. Passport at the Post Office
Renewing Your Passport in Person Is About to Get More Expensive
When you renew your passport, you have two options. You can do it in person at an official passport agency or you can handle it all by mail.
While the thought of mailing off your precious travel documents in an envelope might stress you out, you’ll actually save a lot of money this way.
Either way you renew it, there will always be a 0 application fee, but when you do it in person at an official passport agency they also tack on an additional execution fee that U.S. Department of State says goes towards the “recovery of the costs to the U.S. government of providing the consular service,” Travel Pulse reports.
As of April 2, 2019, that fee will be even more expensive when the Department of State raises it to making the cost of getting a passport renewed in person go from 5 to 5.
However, these extra fees don’t apply to applications sent in by mail. While you must meet certain criteria to qualify for this method, it couldn’t be easier. After you send in a DS-82 form with the rest of the application materials required to the National Passport Processing Center along with a check for 0, you’ll get your new passport back within four to six weeks.
