Shield of the Vikings and Slavs with their own hands

Hello, ladies and gentlemen, today we will talk about a round shield that was used by both our ancestors - the Slavs and the northern Scandinavian warriors, known to the whole world - the Vikings. Just want to say that this is not a reconstruction, i.e. The way to create a shield is not historical. But this does not mean that it is not real.

Need

  • Boards. Part of the pallet, part just lay in the country.
  • Carpenter's glue. Any glue on wood will do.
  • Rivets.
  • Iron sheet.
This is the most basic thing, you will need some more that in trifles, but more on that later.

Making a shield

We’re not looking for simple ways, so we’ll make a shield not from plywood or furniture shield (shield from the shield, cool), but from the boards. These:

And you ask me how to make something cool out of a pile of these old boards? No way! First you need to plan all the blanks.

In the process, I replaced part of the original boards. Easy rubbing of time with a tree gives a special charm, but outright rot is already superfluous. If you buy a edged board (you can take one long one, and then cut it into necessary parts), then you will not have to plan it much, and if you go along a difficult path and take old boards, you will have to adjust the ends. This is me to the fact that all blanks should fit well together. It is necessary for the next stage - gluing. Oh yes. All boards should be no more than 10 mm thick. The shield should be light, the historical viking shield could be in the middle of 8 mm, and already 5 mm to the edges. More than 1 battle shield and should not have been enough, only Umbon tenacious, but more on that later. I glued all the boards on the workbench, with three sides to which were attached in the form of bars. I glued the ends with the joiner's glue Moment. Very good glue, by the way, I gave them both the deck of an electric guitar, and furniture glued together, and of course the shield. All butts were in turn glued and docked. Then the third emphasis was attached to the workbench, which clamped all the boards, and two more boards were placed on top, and plaster blocks were placed on them. This is to ensure that all the gluing does not lead. I left the glue to dry for about a day.

After the circle was drawn 74 cm in diameter. Not the biggest or smallest, in general, I chose this size specifically for myself.

Then I started making umbon. In general, it should be made of steel about 4 mm, but then I decided to take the path of less resistance. I found an iron plate a little more than one mm thick, and began to curve it into a hemisphere.

For this, I dug a pipe into the ground, put a plate on top, heated it constantly with a torch and beat an old dumbbell.

After the edges of the umbon, holes were drilled, and I also cleaned it of the old paint and smoked it on the fire. Also, leather was glued to the inside of the umbone.

Now we mark in the center of the shield a hole under the umbron and carry out drilling and chisel work. That is, we reamer around the edges of the markup, and afterwards we cut out the circle with a chisel, those places that were not reamed. And also we drill the Umbon itself and the shield along the edges of the hole for rivets.

We fasten the umbon to the shield on the rivets. And we paint the shield with stain. I used a mixture of mahogany and mocha. It turned out quite interesting. With different lighting and different angles, the color is dark saturated, then dull light.

Next I made a handle from a pine bar. Why from the pine? Because I was lying at hand, why else ?!

The handle is attached to the shield also on the rivets and to each board in order to strengthen the shield. Then I found black and brown skin, which was cut into strips and nailed to the shield on small carnations. On the back, all the skin had to be additionally attached with a large stapler, because the studs were too short. Go to the store and buy cloves of the right length? Not, not our option.

This completes the manufacture of the shield. And yes, we tried to beat him with an ax and, oh, a miracle, he endured! It’s better not to repeat this, even if you make a shield and are not sure about it.

There is a rune ax, there is a shield, it remains to make a drakkar and on the march!
