The secrets of growing ginger
The beneficial properties of ginger have long been known to many. And today this wonderful plant can be purchased in almost any store. But if you do not want to overpay and want to enjoy the benefits all year round, try growing ginger at home!
So, how to grow ginger at home? First you need to choose the planting material. Best of all, such a plant multiplies by grafting, which means that you need to use the root part. Go to the store and select the root.
It must necessarily be with viable kidneys, it is from them that the overground part begins to develop. These buds look like the eyes of a potato and should be fresh and dense. The root itself must be whole, not frozen and not overdried. On its surface there should be no damage and stains. Peel should be shiny, smooth.
Ginger can also be grown from seed, but it is more difficult and takes a lot of time.
How to grow?
If you decide to use the root, you can take it whole or separate some part. It is advisable to treat the cut place with a weak solution of potassium permanganate (ordinary potassium permanganate), this will avoid fungal infections. To stimulate the growth of the kidneys, the root part for several hours should be placed in warm water.
Next, the rhizome moves into the pot to a depth of about two or three centimeters, but in such a way that most of the eyes are at the top. The soil is abundantly watered. Humidity must be constantly maintained. The first shoots under favorable conditions should appear after two or three weeks.
By the way, the most successful time for planting is the end of winter. Just by spring, the plant will be strengthened, and by autumn it will yield a crop.
If you decide to use seeds, you should sow them in a box with drainage on the bottom and fertile soil. Capacity is desirable to put in a warm and well-lit place. Humidity should be maintained. When sprouts appear, you need to plant sprouts.
Selection of pot and soil
Equally important is the choice of a pot in which ginger will grow. It is best to use a wide one, since the root will grow to the sides, rather than deeper.
As for the soil, it is desirable to use fertile loam with a significant content of humus. At the bottom of the box, place a drain, the layer of which will be about three centimeters. It can consist of a mixture of equal parts of sand, leaf humus and sod land.
To get a fairly large and useful root, provide the ginger with the right care. There are several important points, all of them are worth telling in detail.
Choosing the right place
If the pot will be at home, then choose a warm place. But to place ginger on the windowsill is not worth it, since an excessive amount of direct sunlight can be disastrous for him and lead to drying out. It is advisable to choose a plot in the penumbra or with diffused light.
If you decide to grow ginger in the country, then place the bed is not under the sun. It can be located in the shadow of a tree or, for example, behind the house. By the way, you first need to sprout ginger at home in a pot, so that sprouts appear and hardened. And approximately in April or in May, the root can be moved to the prepared garden.
Humidity and temperature
The optimum temperature is 20-25 degrees.Below 5 degrees it should not fall.
Humidity should be quite high, so keep it constant. Ginger loves spraying, so as often as possible (up to several times a day), do this procedure. In addition, next to the pot you can put a container with water.
It is necessary to water ginger quite often, but it is better to have a little so that the water does not stagnate (this can lead to decay of the roots). In hot weather, the amount of liquid should be increased, and as the temperature decreases, it is desirable to reduce it.
The soil should not dry out, otherwise the plant will simply die. Constantly monitor its humidity. To avoid moisture stagnation, you can carefully loosen the ground after each watering.
Ginger requires additional feeding, which is done once or twice a week from the moment the first shoots appear and practically until the end of summer. Both organic and mineral supplements are used.
So, first you can use mullein, diluted with water at a ratio of 1:10. And from August you can use organic fertilizers, as well as potash fertilizers, which ensure growth. If you plan to grow ginger for more than one year and see flowers, then add phosphorus, it will contribute to the establishment of buds.
Harvesting is carried out in late September or early October. By this time, the shoot will look like a rather dense stem with oblong leaves. Something ginger is like a reed.
If you are lucky enough to see flowers (they usually appear on the second or third year of cultivation), they will be red and oblong, resembling cones with many small petals.
Before harvesting, watering should be completely stopped. The leaves and stems will gradually turn yellow and dry, all the nutrients from them will go to the root. When the above-ground part completely fades, you can scoop out the ginger.
Dug out roots need to be cleaned from the soil and dried well in the sun for three to four days. The product can then be used or stored in the refrigerator for several months. It can also be dried.
If you plan to grow ginger further, then leave it to hibernate. If you keep ginger in the garden, then in order to avoid freezing of the root, move it home, but in a cool room. Watering cut down. Around the end of March or April, increase the watering again, and place the pot in heat.
If ginger grows at home, then for the winter too he needs to ensure peace by reducing watering and moving the pot to a cool place.
Let ginger grow and make you happy! But for this, provide him with the right care.
