Mom Is Left Fighting For Her Life After Scratching Her Finger Whilst Cleaning Her New Home
This Mom Is Fighting For the Lives of Her Conjoined Twins—But Only One Is Expected to Survive
When given bad news where the consequences seem impossible to change, most people tend to give up. But when Amber McCullough, 31, learned she was going to give birth to conjoined twins who weren't expected to make it, she decided to fight.
McCullough, who is already the mother of a six-year-old Tristan, recently went through a C-section surgery that made headlines. She learned early on that only one of her twins would survive.
Doctors say the conjoined twins, named Hannah and Olivia, are one of the rarest cases they've ever seen. They were connected at the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. The twin girls shared an abdomen, liver, and intestinal tract. They had their own kidneys and hearts, but Olivia's heart only had a single ventricle, and was missing heart valves. Olivia also had a congenital brain malformation. Because of this, it was likely Olivia would not survive the birth.
McCullough shared, "If I had my way, I'd keep them together if they both could live. But it's not possible. If they stay together, they'll both pass."
Unfortunately, McCullough, who is an attorney and US Army Reserves Captain, will have to go through the ordeal on her own. The pregnancy was unplanned, and though McCullough was once in a relationship with the father of the babies, the pair have now split.
Despite learning of the tenuous circumstances, McCullough refuses to give up: "I just can't lose both. There's a chance of saving one." For this reason, McCullough decided not to terminate her pregnancy: "I have been in a position where I have had much pressure to abort at times, and I refuse. Instead I choose to embrace their life while they are here and fight like crazy to do all I can for my daughters."
After learning of the news, McCullough set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical and travel expenses.
McCullough has since issued a statement following the birth of her conjoined twins at Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children's Hospital Colorado. It reads as follows:
I will not be getting into any other details until I am discharged and feeling up for it. But I would like everyone to know [...] that Hannah did survive the surgery. However, she is very critical and very delicate. So what I would like is to appeal to as many people public for prayer. I believe in the power of prayer and the talent of medical professionals here. Could you please ask that the public pray as she waits for her life this week?
Though the report does not specify whether or not Olivia survived the birth and consequent surgery, we wish McCullough and her growing family all the best, and we offer her our prayers.
