Tibetan Mastiff - breed, food, care

Tibetan Mastiff is one of the oldest dog breeds, and its homeland is Tibet. Due to the low availability of the region, the breed is preserved almost in its original form and is distinguished by the purity of blood, because it was rarely exported from the country and did not mix with others. The animals are characterized by amazing endurance, unsurpassed strength, the ability to easily tolerate both heat and cold.

Historical background

The ancestors of the Tibetan mastiffs are the famous Tibetan mastiffs, from which the breed inherited impressive growth and a long life expectancy - up to sixteen years on average, which is not surprising, considering the predisposition to longevity of all residents of the "enlightened" region.

Traveling beyond the Himalayas for the breed began in the thirteenth century, due to the emergence of trade routes through Tibet. These giant dogs have become excellent watchmen and companions for merchants. Then they were brought to Mongolia, Central Asia and Mesopotamia, where later they came to the Greeks and settled in the Mediterranean.

The Romans appreciated their excellent fighting qualities, and the legionaries for their resilience and loyalty in long campaigns. Mastiffs were bestowed on crowned persons, relating to royal breeds. Today, Tibetan mastiffs are rarely found in Europe, the USA and Russia.

Animal standards

Mastiffs are dogs with a powerful heavy body and a slightly flattened good-natured muzzle. These dogs are guards and watchmen, who are always attentive to what is happening around, but are not devoid of sociability. The animal matures slowly, depending on gender, bitches by the age of three, and males by the age of four. The description of the Tibetan mastiff is as follows:

  2. The head is on a muscular neck. The chest is strong, the body is of medium length with a tail, it rests on strong parallel limbs with large lumpy legs.A dog with a powerful physique gives the impression of reliability and endurance.

  • brown with gold;
  • gray with gold.
  1. There is a place for small white markings on the chest and on the tips of the paws, a reddish hue of the eyebrows, the paws and the tip of the tail. According to the Tibetan monks, a breastplate means a brave heart, and tan marks help the mastiffs penetrate the human world and the hearts of people.
  2. The breed is characterized by the presence of growth at the withers and weight:
  • males - sixty-six centimeters and up to seventy eight kilograms;
  • bitches - sixty-one centimeter and sixty four kilograms.

Content policy

Before deciding to acquire a mastiff, two important points must be considered, such as:

  • family members are not allergic to wool;
  • the presence of a large area of residence.

This dog is not for an apartment, so they keep it in an aviary or in the yard, where it perfectly demonstrates its skills as a caretaker at home.Being inconspicuous at the usual time and formidable in the right situations, she loudly scares off intruders with a loud barking and a formidable look, and when provoked on an attack, she densens her thick wool and bristles, acquiring an awesome appearance.

Mastiff from childhood is taught to obey and execute commands, not allowing excessive tenderness and softness, considering that the cute puppy will soon turn into a huge dog. Games of an animal with children are allowed to socialize it, but with respect for the distance the owner-dog.

Caring for a Tibetan mastiff is difficult in terms of grooming, because combing and mowing such a colossus is not an easy task that requires patience and skills. Shedding time is spring, when real housewives can gather loose wool and knit a warm sweater from it for an adult. It is necessary to care for a dog, taking into account some features:

  1. In order to keep fit, the dog needs long regular walks and active activities-entertainment, with jogging and hunting whenever possible.
  2. Every week it is recommended to comb the mastiff using a large rigid brush. During the molt, this procedure is performed much more often and outside the house in order not to litter the dwelling with a large amount of wool.
  3. An important advantage of the breed is the absence of odor, which makes it possible to wash pets much less frequently than other breeds. In addition, the mastiffs are very clean animals, they preserve the cleanliness and well-groomed appearance for a long time.
  4. In the heat and cold, the dog is comfortable, thanks to the thick wool, so they can be kept in any climate without difficulty.
  5. Mastiff withstands physical loads, the degree of which depends on the characteristics of his nutrition, which must be taken into account the owner of the dog.

Feeding the animal

The food of the Tibetan mastiff should be regime and not excessive, although in accordance with its impressive size, it seems that huge portions lead to overfeeding. Puppies aged from one and a half months to three, feed up to six times a day with lightly boiled beef, dairy products in the form of cottage cheese or kefir, steamed vegetables, preferably pureed with a spoon of vegetable oil.

Canine experts recommend feeding the dog with raw, scalded boiling water and sliced meat:

  • a monthly puppy can eat no more than one hundred and fifty grams a day;
  • a four month old puppy from three hundred grams to half a kilogram of meat.

Dairy products - cottage cheese and kefir in the diet of an adult dog are preserved, but are offered much less frequently.

It is not recommended to mix feed from different manufacturers, and if you enter into the diet of dry food, then gradually. First, it is added to the main food, watching the reaction of the pet and its taste preferences.

When changing mood, feeling unwell, excessive lethargy of an animal, food is changed or excluded altogether. Do not feed:

  • in a limp condition;
  • long lay limp;
  • with a non-rigid granule structure.

Regardless of the type of food - natural products or dry food, there must always be unlimited access of the dog to clean fresh drinking water, especially in summer.

Puppies do not need food at all, as a growing body requires adequate nutrition. The transition to feed is carried out in the period of maturity, with a set of growth and the presence of complete puberty.

The basis of the diet is meat, but without overfeeding the animal. Another advantage of the breed is the ability to regulate the measure in food, which helps to avoid the development of obesity. Dogs do not suffer gluttony.

The place is settled closer to the owner, but because of the size of the Tibetan mastiff it is usually a spacious and dry booth in the yard, where the pet will feel protected. The guilty dog, who received the command "place", is sent to the booth to serve the sentence. The breed is easy to train, due to the presence of a good memory of what to do with an early puppy age.

The maturing dog in time is disaccustomed to puppy habits in the form of jumping with paws on people, woofing on passers-by, gnawing shoes with furniture, felting in the mud. Encourage verbally and dainty.

The collar and leash for the mastiff are required from an early age, but they are removed in the courtyard so as not to spoil the exterior. Dogs with pleasure roll kids on sleigh and frolic with adults.
