We grow thuya from seeds: photo master class

The simplest and most convenient technology of thuja breeding is sowing seeds before winter into the ground. Seedlings are strong, well developed. You can get any number of seedlings in a fairly short time. Here's how to do it.

Why is it convenient to propagate thuy seeds

Thuja is hardy and unpretentious. This is one of the best plants for hedges: thanks to the evergreen needles, it protects the garden from the cold wind both in summer and in winter. But for a hedge you need a large number of very expensive plants. Where to get so many seedlings, if you do not want to bear the extra costs?

Propagating with thuja seeds, you can get any number of seedlings in 3-4 years. And do not be afraid that in the first year of life the seedlings reach only 7 centimeters. After 2 years of cultivation, they will grow up to 50 cm, and in the future they will give an increase of about 30 cm per season.

How to prepare seeds of thuja from cones

Thuja seeds ripen in late August - early September. You need to collect the seeds before the buds are open.

Spread the collected cones of thuja with a thin layer to dry in a warm dry place. As soon as the buds dry out and unfold, the seeds loose out of them. When sowing, it is better not to pull: if you store the seeds of thuja at room temperature, after three months their germination rate decreases sharply. If, nevertheless, decide to sow in spring, they will need stratification (impact with low temperatures) for successful germination.

It is easiest to sow freshly harvested seeds in the fall, leaving the crops to winter on the street. The natural stratification increases the germination energy, seedlings sprout earlier than after spring sowing, require less care, grow faster and more successfully tolerate the first wintering.

Sowing thuya seeds

You can sow thuya directly into the ground on a specially designated garden bed, but it is better to sow the seeds in a box. It is more convenient to work this way, and it is easier to care for the seedlings: if necessary, the box can be moved to any place.

Fill the box with a mixture of turf or garden soil, peat and sand (1: 2: 0.5 parts). Smooth well over the entire surface and compact the soil so that the side of the box rises 2-3 cm above it.After this, it is necessary to mark the grooves at a distance of 5-6 centimeters.

To make it easier to deepen the seeds, expand the grooves.

Evenly distribute the seeds of thuja throughout the length of the groove.

From above, cover the crops with a soil mixture of about 1 cm. Seal the surface with a plank. If the weather is dry, then water a little, but make sure that the seeds do not surface. Those seeds that still pop up, need to sprinkle a small amount of soil. In wet weather, watering is not required.

How to care for Tui crops

Install a box with sowing outside, better under the crown of trees: then the seedlings will not be in the spring under direct sunlight - for coniferous plants, including Tui, it is dangerous. If there are animals in your area, then crops should be covered with a film or non-woven covering material. After the snow has melted, make sure that the shelter does not touch the ground.

2-3 weeks after the soil warms up to + 10 ... + 15 ° С, the thuja produces the first shoots. Thuja seedlings are not similar to adult plants: their needles are needle-shaped, and not scaly, like in adult plants.

It may give the impression that instead of thuja, another plant has grown from seeds — for example, spruce or juniper. But do not be alarmed: in 2-3 months the seedlings will have the first branches with real scaly needles.

Every two weeks, feed the plants with a solution of complete mineral fertilizer (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium). You can use the fertilizer "Mortar", "Agricola" - they include trace elements (manganese, zinc, molybdenum, copper, boron). During the season, seedlings grow to 7-8 cm and remain to spend the winter in a box.

If the crops are not very thickened, and the box is deep enough (or you sowed directly into the soil), then the crops in the same place can be left for another year. But more developed saplings of thuja are obtained if you plant them in a small school (a bed for growing) after the first wintering.

A place for school is best to choose in light penumbra. Add to the soil on 1 square. m: humus (1 bucket), nitroammofosku (40 g) and wood ash (250-300 g), dig a good spade on the spade.

Thuja tolerates transplant at any age. In the school for growing it is planted according to the scheme 30x30 cm.

When planting, make sure that the root collar remains at the soil damage, and the penetration leads to damping. As a result, the thuja turns yellow and usually dies.

After planting, pour and grind with peat. Feed every 2-3 weeks the same way as in the previous season, water in dry weather, after watering, loosen the soil and at the same time loosening remove weeds. In the third year of cultivation, when the thuja grown from seeds reaches a height of 50 centimeters, it can be planted in a permanent place.

For a hedge a uniform planting material is needed, but when growing thuja from seeds, the forms split: sowing plants are obtained with different outlines and crowns density.

This problem has a solution.

At the age of 2-3 years, the thuja seedlings already clearly show the future shape of the crown. You can easily find the necessary amount of uniform planting material for hedges or other purposes. In addition, the thuja tolerates a haircut very well, and the desired shape of the hedge can be obtained even if the seedlings are slightly different.
